How Alligator Lacing Works

Alligator lacing utilizes a design with teeth that enter parallel to the length of the belt and imbed clear through the belt carcass. The teeth are formed so that when they are driven into the belt, the vital longitudinal carcass fibers are not severed.

Additional strength is obtained due to the connecting bar and because the fastener strip is one continuous piece. This provides a strong, vise-like hold on the belt and distributes belt tension evenly across the entire belt width. The one-piece fastener strip also insures that there are no loose pieces to work themselves out of the belt and into the conveyed product. The straight splice obtained with a continuous strip of lacing also helps with hinge pin insertion.

Strength of this fastener is derived from the compression of the plates, mounted above and below the belt, with high tensile strength bolts. this “compression” distributes the splice tension across the full width of each fastener plate. The holding ability is, thereby, increased by not solely relying upon the bolts to resist pull-out.

Additional strength and resistance to pull-out is obtained from the specially formed teeth on each plate. These teeth imbed deep into the belt carcass, but without damaging the carcass fibers.

A tight butt splice is achieved through the exaggerated bolt hole spacing in the templet which forces the belt ends together. And, the Bolt Solid Plate Fasteners permit natural conformance with troughing or transition idlers.

The 140, 190 and 2 ¼ size fasteners are specifically designed for today’s thinner belting, allowing increased compression, greater reach-back and more fastener plates per belt width.

Notes

  1. Hook Series groupings are determined by wire diameter and/or cross section. The ClipMark Series has a flattened oval design to achieve a low profile without sacrificing strength. The Rectangular Series has a rectangular cross section and additional strength for abusive or abrasive applications. All others are round wire.
  2. Hook Size/Style – The various size hooks have the appropriate loop, leg length and point lengths to accommodate belt thickness ranges indicated. Sizes designated with “U” are Unibar Style.

The Roller Lacer

In 1982, Clipper Belt Lacer Company introduced a product that revolutionized conveyor belt lacing. the Roller Lacer combined common sense and convenience in a lightweight machine that allowed a single operator to consistently install quality, long-lasting splices in wide belts. Hooks go into the belt quickly, yet evenly.

The Roller Lacer comes in four widths: 24″, 36″, 48″ and 60″. These lacers are custom designed to work with a wide range of Clipper fasteners.

The Roller Lacer

Hinged bolt fasteners provide a flexible joint for belts operating over small pulleys. Because the joint is easily separated by simply removing the hinge pin, entire belt sections may be added or eliminated.

Designed as a compression fastener, the bolt hinged model is fastened to the belt ends with high strength bolts. These compress the plates into the belt cover. Additional holding capabilities is provided by the fastener teeth that imbed in the belt without damage to the belt carcass.

This combination distributes the splice tension across the entire plate width, while the teeth secure the fastener into the belt carcass to resist pull-out.

375X

Designed for belt conveyors with center distances less than 1000 feet.

For belts 1/4″ to 13/32″ thick.

Use on belts with mechanical fastener ratings up to 190 PIW.

Operates over 6″ minimum pulley diameter.

Fastener strips ensure a straight splice and faster installation.

Available in complete joints for various belt widths or in bulk fasteners without hinge pins.

550

For belts 1/4″ to 5/8″ thick.

Use on belts with mechanical fastener ratings up to 300 PIW.

Operates over 9″ minimum pulley diameters.

Available in complete joints for various belt widths or in bulk fasteners without hinge pins.

Most 550 steel joints are furnished with continuous, single-piece fastener strips (belt widths 24″, 30″, 36″, 42″ and 48″). These strips reduce installation time and insure a straight splice. These and other width joints are available, made up with individual fastener plates, for increased joint flexibility on deep-troughing idlers or where poor belt alignment is a problem.

750

For belts 9/16″ to 7/8″ thick.

Use on belts with mechanical ratings up to 400 PIW.

Operates over 20″ minimum pulley diameters.

Available in complete joints for various belt widths or in bulk fasteners without hinge pins. Individual steel plates are standard.

Hinge Pins for Bolt Hinged Lacing

SC - Bare Steel Cable

For conveying gritty or highly abrasive material, Bare Steel Cable (SC) is recommended. Offered for numbers 375X and 550 fasteners only.

NCS - Nylon Covered Stainless Steel Cable

For greater corrosion resistance, the Nylon Covered Stainless Steel Cable (NCS) is furnished standard with Stainless joints. In is notrecommended for use with deep troughing idlers over 35 º.

NC - Nylon Covered Steel Cable

The nylon coating reduces corrosion and makes pin insertion easier.

NB - Nylon Covered Bronze Cable

For a non-magnetic joint, use fully non-magnetic Nylon Covered Bronze Cable (NB) with Everdur fasteners.

SSC - Bare Stainless Steel Cable

Where corrosion attacks steel cable hinge pins, Bare Stainless Steel Cable (SSC) does the job. Not recommended for use with deep troughing idlers over 35 º.

NAC - Nylon Covered Armored Cable

The right hinge pin for many mining conditions is the Nylon Covereed Armored Cable (NAC). Long service life is due to the patented hinge pin design. It combines a durable, flat wire wrap around the cable which is covered by nylon for smooth operation.

Note: Bulk fastener sets, replacement bolts and nuts and extra hinge pins are available. Please call our TFE Customer Service Department for availability.

Bolt Hinged Installation Tools and Supplies

Curved Templates

Used in conjunction with the “clip and gauge rod” method to install complete joints, the templet acts as a guide to accurately punch or drill holes into the belt ends. This insures proper fastener alignment.

Templets are available for all sizes of Bolt Hinged fasteners. They come in lengths for standard belt widths. See table below for ordering information.

Hand or Power Tools for Bolt Hinged Fasteners

In addition to a templet or aligning holder, the following hand or power tools are required for installation: a punch or a boring bit (the punch is preferred for general use and where the belt cover is over 3/16″ thick); a wrench (a different wrench is required for stainless fasteners, which are furnished with slotted nuts); and a bolt breaker.

A power impact wrench cuts application time to approximately 50%. It should be used with a “quick change chuck” which adapts the tools to the square drive stud on an air or electric impact wrench.

The Ready Set Staple System

With the Ready Set Staple fastener system, an extended plate design separates the point of staple penetration from the line of belt flexing, thus eliminating splice fatiguing that results from sawing action at the point of attachment.

High tensile, stainless steel staple fasteners are furnished in strips with a bridge between each fastener plate. This strip design prevents individual parts from getting into the product being conveyed – eliminating a problem that may occur with some hook or teeth types of fasteners. The Ready Set Staples provide a strong splice, resistance to impact damage, and a smooth, unrippled joint that makes hinge pin insertion easier.

Ready Set Staples work between carcass fibers without severing them. Staples are hammer-driven through the belt, then clinched cross-wise to the belt, so that belt tension does not pull against the staples to unclinch them.
